I Must Have Net Access!

- 1 -

Log-on as 'root' and enter:

startx

...to start X Windows.

- 2 -

If the Control Panel is not displayed, move the mouse pointer to somewhere on the desktop, and hold down the left mouse button. Move to the Administration > Control Panel option, and release the mouse button.

- 3 -

Select the Network Configuration button.

- 4 -

See the four buttons at the top of the window - entitled: Names; Hosts; Interfaces; and Routing? These flick you through the four options pages.

The only thing that may cause you inconvenience is the Nameservers box on the Names page. Enter your Primary DNS IP address in here e.g. 194.126.82.5 . If you don't know yours, ask your ISP.

- 5 -

On the Interfaces page, select the Add button. A selection box will appear, entitled 'Choose Interface Type'. Unless you know otherwise it is highly likely that you will require the default of 'PPP' to make a connection. Select the Ok button.

- 6 -

An option box will appear, entitled 'Create PPP Interface'. Enter: The dial-through number for your ISP; your login-name; and your dial-up password. Some providers use an encrypted form of password transmission called PAP (Password Authentication Protocol). If yours is one of these, select 'Use PAP Authentication'. To verify this you could phone your ISP. Now select the Customise button.

- 7 -

A dialog box entitled 'Edit PPP Interface' appears. Again there are four buttons at the top, which cycle you through 4 pages. The only thing you probably want to switch on is the 'Allow Any User to (de)activate Interface' option, which allows users other than 'root' to dial-up.

Note

A red indented box beside an option indicates that the option is on. A grey box indicates that the option is off.

- 8 -

On any page, select the Done button and instruct it to save your configuration. Then select the Quit button on the Network Configurator box.

- 9 -

In the Control Panel, select the Modem Configuration button and select the COM port your modem uses, and then select the Ok button.

- 10 -

Now our PPP connection is configured. To test it, select Programs > Networking > Usernet. Select the 'ppp0' button and if all goes well, your modem will dial-up your ISP. You'll now probably want to run Netscape Navigator and surf the internet for a few hours on your lovely Windoze free browser! ;)

Note

Unfortunately ISP's all require different details to dial-up. I use Global which is a big ISP here in Britain. A lot of people have e-mailed me telling me this guide doesn't get them on the Net. If you are one of those poor souls, then all I can say is that hopefully this guide has steered you in the right direction and hopefully a phone-call or e-mail to your ISP will fill in the missing blanks.
