CONFIGURING A NEW INTERNET CONNECTOID:

Click Start (always top left corner of screen - even here) then settings, and you'll see the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot

Click connections (the tab down the bottom), and you'll see the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot

Click connections (the icon), and you'll see the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot

Click the Modify button just below Internet Settings, and you'll see the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot

Click the word New just below the Name and Number columns, and you'll see the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot
As the screenshot above suggests, a cosmetic name for your internet provider needs to be entered in the first box. Your modem is selected from the second box:
For mobile phones with built in IrDA modems:
- Select Generic IrDA modem, taking care to adjust the baud rate to 9600 only if using a mobile phone.
For "compact flash" type modem cards:
- This may require a disk to be installed from your modem manufacturer - contact their technical support division for more information - it is best to leave the baud rate at 57600 for modem cards.

Now click advanced, and you'll see the screen below:

Particularly useful fault finding listed below if you can't connect:
Only tick the box illustrated above if you find you are disconnected straight after connecting - this would most likely be caused by an incorrect username or password...

Ticking this box will allow you to enter your username & password manually - directly into the server - and show you any errors it may be returning... assuming your account details are correct, you should be offered an option to initiate the internet connection (do select this option), or may even see rubbish like *^(*%(@*&#$Y@I#@ appearing on the screen - this is the internet connection initiating.... it is time critical and important to close the terminal window the moment you see this gibberish appearing, so your palmtop can do it's part - otherwise the connection will close.

Click TCP/IP, and you'll see the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot
These settings are the default, and are correct for mot internet services.

Click Name Servers, and you'll see the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot
I have left the numbers out to eliminate confusion, however, leave all the WINS addresses as 0s.
It is important to enter at least a primary & preferably a secondary DNS - your internet provider will provide you with these if you call their technical support division.

Click ok up the top once this window is complete, and you'll return to the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot

Click Next, and you'll see the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot
Leave the country code as 61 and the area code as your local one eg. 03, and leave them as this when overseas. This will eliminate confusion when abroad - you will see why as we move on... just remember to insert any special codes in the phone number box with the internet providers dialup number, using commas if you wish to insert a short pause into the dialling.

Click Next, and you'll see the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot
Both boxes above need to be unticked so as to prevent any strange dialling errors.
(x3 in extra settings will help if you are still getting no dialtone errors)

Click Finish, and you'll return to the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot

Click OK, and you'll return to the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot

Click Dialing Locations, and you'll see the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot

Particularly useful if you see numbers listed before the dialin number when connecting:
Once again, it is important we only use one location, with 61 in the country code, and your STD code (eg 03) in the area code. This will prevent strange numbers from being inserted before the dialin number, which would be caused by a mismatch between the area/country code here, and the one in the connectoid settings.

If you always leave them the same, and only insert any special STD codes in the dialin number box, things will be a lot more simple & predictable- particularly if travelling.

Click Dialing Patterns, and you'll see the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot

As you can see above, the final step of preventing strange numbers appearing before the dialin number is setting all the fields to just a g. Inevitably, country & area codes don't appear as expected unless they are set exactly right everywhere on the palmtop.  Keeping them all the same allows you to update these codes purely by editing the phone number field, the only place where these codes need to be inserted.

Click OK to return to the previous screen, then OK again to return to the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot
This completes the dialup configuration. Close this window by hitting the X in the top corner.

To configure Internet Explorer to use a proxy server:
(only necessary if your internet provider demands it)

Click Start (always top left corner of screen - even here) then settings, and you'll see the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot

Click connections (the tab down the bottom), and you'll see the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot

Click connections (the icon), and you'll see the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot

Click the down arrow next to Internet Settings and select Work Settings from the drop down list, as seen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot

Click the Modify button below where we have selected Work Settings (up the top), and you'll see the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot
You will note the "new" entry in the list of names and numbers here. Unlike in internet settings, your internet connection isn't listed.. sadly, to set up a connection that makes use of a proxy server, you will need to create a separate (but identical, except for the proxy) connection. This can be done using the same instructions above for configuring a new internet connectoid.

Click the Proxy Settings tab down the bottom, and you'll see the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot

Ensure your settings include both boxes ticked, your proxy server address in the box that says "my.proxy.com" and that the port number is correct for your internet provider under advanced (their technical support division will provide & confirm this information). If your provider does not require a proxy, or you don't have one, it may very well work without it... just remove both ticks from the boxes above, then click ok up the top to complete the settings for Internet Explorer.

To configure Pocket Outlook Inbox:

Press the plastic button below the screen with a house on it (the home button), and you'll see the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot

Clicking the envelope pictured above (with "Inbox" underneath) will load Pocket Outlook Inbox, as seen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot

Clicking Tools then Options will bring up the configuration screen, as seen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot

Clicking New will bring up the configuration screen, as seen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot
Ensure you enter your email address exactly as provided by your internet provider, including exact capitalisation. If you are unsure of your email address, it is worth calling your provider to clarify this, or when people hit reply to your messages, their reply will go astray.

Clicking Next will bring up the following screen:
Jornada 560 screenshot

Just click next to skip through and bring up the next screen, as seen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot
Your name, as it will be read by your email recipients, should be in the first box.  In the user name box, insert your login name, exactly as provided by your internet providers' technical support division - naturally same goes for the password. I suggest ticking the box to remember the password - if someone takes your palmtop, the least of your worries is going to be them reading your mail.

Clicking Next will bring up the next settings screen, as seen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot
As above, POP3 is suitable for most email accounts, and a cosmetic name for your email server is also added below (eg. Bigpond/Ihug).

Clicking Next will bring up the next settings screen, as seen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot
Put the incoming mail (POP) server in the first box, followed by the outgoing mail (SMTP) address in the second - your internet providers' technical support division will supply you with these.
Although the above settings can be customised to work with domain models, for the purposes of standard dialin internet mail, I would recommend leaving the domain field blank.

Clicking Options will bring up the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot
As can be seen above, most of the settings from here on in are personal preference.
Checking for new mail shouldn't be set to less than every 5 minutes.. you might also want to tick "outgoing e-mail server requires authentification", as most servers will need this to prevent junk mailers using their system. Connection should be set to "default internet settings".

Clicking Next, will bring up the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot
Personal preference, once again, but "Get full copy of messages" will minimise hassles when picking up mail.

Clicking Next, will bring up the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot
To avoid messages not appearing, when in fact they are on the unit, I would suggest unticking the above option to only display some of the messages.

Clicking Finish, will return you to the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot
The three tabs across the bottom of the screen above can be used to fine tune your preferences, and are all pretty self explanatory, and beyond the scope of this document. Congratulations! You now should have a palmtop capable of connecting to the net.

Connecting to the internet:

To connect, you can get to the connectoid screen we did earlier by clicking Start, Settings, Connections.  Then click the connections icon to see the screen below:
Jornada 560 screenshot
Unlike earlier, we now have the option to click the connect button to establish a connection to the internet. Although just launching the email client or web browser will also usually present you with the option to connect, it is good practice to establish the connection manually this way prior to opening your web browser or mail client.

It is important, naturally, when keying in your username & password, that it is exactly correct, right down to capitalisation.  Domain must also remain blank.  While connecting, confirm no strange numbers are listed in the phone number - if you see weird numbers, confirm your area & country code settings all match using the guide above for setting up a connectoid.

Assuming you hit connect, and everything works as expected, you should next see the screens below:
Jornada 560 screenshot  Jornada 560 screenshot  Jornada 560 screenshot
If not, consider using the post dial terminal window to confirm the internet provider isn't returning an error when receiving your username & password.  This can be easily located above, as it is the only section with two screenshots side by side.  Should you require further assistance, please call HP's Jornada technical support division.
