Are you sure that it's not a graphics card issue?
Attach a different monitor (preferably a different model to his monitor with the problem) and see if the fault still occurs.
If it does, it's very likely the graphics card causing this. Possibly update drivers.
Search Google for "screen going blank (insert gfx card model number)" issues with that model of card.
If is doesn't. It's the monitor.
Is his computer a PC or a laptop?
If it's a PC, Does it have a graphics card or is he using the onboard option on the motherboard?
It could also possibly be a lack of RAM or a slow CPU or both.

have considered graphics card to be the culprit

it is a desktop, its brand new, he just got it last week or 2, not sure if he has tried another monitor on it or not, and i know its not lack of ram or anything as his dad built it for him, his dad is good with computers (im over hearing that he is the best lol)

Is the game running at a different screen resolution to the desktop size?
A change in resolution can cause a blank screen for a second or 2.

Does the screen still turn on and off?

Did you check out the power brick/supply for the monitor itself?
because sometimes they are don't work properly, rma it or get another if that's the case.

Also changing the directx won't do anything, this is a brand new install of windows 7 i'm assuming?
Try reinstalling windows, it's a long shot, but it might work.

And what power supply for the whole computer does he have?

Also can you list the specs of all the things he's got so I can check if that power supply is sufficient for that build?

I don't spose you are able to make it happen the same way by wiggling the cable? I had had trouble with HDMI connections that weren't perfect - over time it would make the plug n play noise that only HDMI makes (kinda similar to the usb one) and totally go blank or the picture would get dots of noise through it - wiggling the cable or moving it's angle softly in the socket seemed to improve it and reduce the cutouts... not sure if it's that but worth a look.

Good luck with it.. mebbe try a different way of connecting? Like, has it got VGA or DVI?
