19.02.08 link outage: nikt.ath.cx aka drug.kicks-ass.net

Postby [DRuG]NikT on Tue Feb 19, 2008 7:31 pm

OK, my ADSL routing has issues.. and not at my end.. at TPGs.

With 2 separate routers, the symptom is identical - it will ping web sites, respond, but never actually load the site.

On the other hand, the TPG web site pops up almost instantly, including unvisited subpages. Thus, the workaround, while I wait the 48 hours for a specialist to look at the problem, is to surf the web via the TPG proxy.

During the initial support call, they dropped my line speed to 756k from 1.2Mb - very distressing, especially when I'm supposed to have 2+Mb to begin with. It took 2 waits on hold, with me insisting I wasn't happy, and wouldn't be until it was restored, for them to set it back at 1.2Mb. My fear was that, they see me put up with 750k connection, proxied web, who knows, they might be trying it on people to see if they'll swallow... and I don't.

My account billing seems to have an extraordinary item "balance brought forward $0.00", which it has never shown before, however, TPG reassure me the billing is fine, the system would tell them if that is what was affecting it.

I bet you it's the billing.

Now we wait 24 - 48 hours.. though it seems the mta/ts/samp servers are all behaving good as gold, it's just my web that's affected - let me know if you experience any issues with my connection.

Well, spoke to the escalation tech, who started asking if I could try a third ADSL modem, halved the speed for testing of a perfectly synched line, then at my insistence that all traffic runs at full speed, just that i am forced to use the proxy, so the line/router couldn't be faulted, she then asked me to turn off all proxies then run a traceroute.

Now... it isn't easy to proxy shell, so I sent her a traceroute from shell, but the fact she was referring to having proxies off, makes me assume she means a web traceroute... how the fuck am I supposed to run a web traceroute when the browser only responds with proxy on???!!!

I'm not too confident with the support I'm receiving... so here's the traceroute I emailed her, as requested...

Hi Anne,

As discussed, please find below, a traceroute both from the command prompt, then from a web based traceroute service, in case this helps shed light on why I can only obtain access to web sites via the TPG proxy since 2 days ago.

My internet still runs at full speed, and all other ports aside from 80 behave perfectly, however, being forced to use the web proxy will certainly raise many issues for me, should this not be resolved.

It should be noted that although services/commands such as traceroute and DNS are working unproxied, the actual web traffic itself, eg. files etc., never come through - the browser just reports "waiting for http://www.google.com", unless I request the page from the proxy. The TPG web page also works unproxied - but no others.

I was able to access the web unproxied up until a few days ago - I suspect something has changed on TPG's servers pertaining to my port 80 routing, since I am still able to do everything at full speed including online games.. but the only way I can get web is to turn the proxy on - this is the same on many machines (mac and pc) and two separate routers.

Traceroute from the command prompt (no proxies):

hahahaha indeed. Well, I hope this turns out more than comedy relief for me <3 Good luck man, I'm sure once they see they've got a poweruser that they'll start handing you off to one another and you'll have extra time for your support, but it'll be worth it because you'll pwn some CSR n00bs on the way. Cheers for that? :P

Well, after about 12 calls from helpdesk that didn't achieve much more than to quantify the issue, my case then went to the proxy admin, then the highest level network team - they returned the case to the helpdesk saying "everything seems ok - get him to check", right on time with their handling of the case, it seems, my transparent proxying has gone away.. I am able to log on to littlewhiteys mtastats web page, then have it recognize me as the same IP in game, so it seems something has finally been done. This wasn't the case prior, as the mtastats web page only ever got to see the IP of the transparent proxy... now it seems to see mine, so my races get counted in the MTA stats.

YAY for me!
