Depending how smoothly things go, I may need to install a new disk and rebuild - just a matter of if I can repair the lost sectors... at this stage, fsck is failing and only mounting the disk in read only mode - see screenshots below.
I'll post more info as it emerges, but fret not, this isn't a permanent outage - just hardware failure.
And after some investigation, having to fix a stack of busted sectors, the disk has come up with major file damage, so this is going to mean a full rebuild.. but first I'll rescue all the data (hopefully) using a knoppix linux live cd and a USB hard disk. Screenshots of the borked box below:
