new multimedia speakers

Postby zog on Wed Dec 30, 2009 10:18 pm

Just spent a few months making these in the garage (on and off)... plugged into the loungeroom media PC for movies and music (vidcard not up to games unfortunately) via USB Alien DAC:

(the red ones)

subwoofer: don't needem
5.1 surround sound: don't needem

Very nice!

I see your self made briefcase amp there, too.

Duncan & Col, two of my mates IRL, take apart quality amplifiers and pimp the components with superior ones.. amazing sound on their speakers.

Ah nice! they have horn tweeters as well.. good thing with them is a much wider "sweet spot" for the treble.
I can't be bothered with surround sound myself.. I'm an old fogie who is happy with Left and Right channels.

For those interested I made along obsessively nerdy blog post about the fun making them here:

Decided the speakers needed a bit more gruntage to drive them to their best: so using a dumpster dived steel power supply box as a case I've got aClass T high grade (but low cost) amp module from China:

Looks industrial, sounds incredible.
