Windows 3.11 for Workgroups

Postby [DRuG]NikT on Wed Jan 07, 2009 5:21 pm

Just replaced a system which had died over Christmas in Microbiology.. backed it up then restored the image onto a new system for them... TA-DAAA - Windows 3.11 for Workgroups running perfectly on a P4. HAH! First 3.11 box I've seen this century.

Agreed..

When I finally got onto a machine capable of running it, I used Windows 3.11 to run Trumpet Winsock and NCSA Mosaic to browse the web on a 2400 baud (2.4k/sec) modem... on a 66MHz machine. This is a 3.2GHz machine. I thought it deserved an IBM though..

Big old medical diagnostic instrument... software devs long since out of biz... works just great on the old software.. new stuff would cost literally millions.

I still got an old Olivetti 286 running Windows 3.1 sitting around. Its only 2-3 meters away from me though I haven't touched it in years.

Used to have a 486 (Running 3.11) too but it screwed up and ended up getting gutted. Still got the 120mb hard drive though.

They both got heavy use until 2001 when we got a new computer shortly after XP was released.

I can't believe we will have to wait until 2014 to play GTA V on PC.

Windows 3.11 was the last MS operating system I really knew well, as a user and supporting it working as an ISP tech.

After that I ascended into happy joy joy Linux server land.. though I have to support a bit of (spit) MS server 2003 in corporate land now.

My first OS was CP/M 2.2.. woohoo (on a Morrow Microdecision MD4, followed by a Microbee Computer In A Book).

I think theres some kids on my lawn now.. I better hobble off
