Cool Gadgets : Electric bike

Postby zog on Thu Sep 18, 2008 1:17 am

On the subject of cool gadgets I have been riding as my main vehicle for a few months an electric bike:

I'm getting real addicted to this tech.. getting to work and back for 3.9 cents of electricity certainly helps...

Looks like a 5 speed. That bike is awesome. What are they running for? Probably still over 500USD. I always wanted to get one of those engines that you attach to any bike, but I think they are no longer legally available and crappy compared to a bike built for it from the get-go.

I can't believe we will have to wait until 2014 to play GTA V on PC.

How fast can you go with that if you use the electric motor, and pedal on the last gear at the same time? Heh.

For those not already aware, zog is Duncan - one of my best mates IRL, and top level admin of our domain - *.zog.net.au - he's possibly one of the hardest core linux geeks you could meet, responsible for the consistent uptime and safety of DRuG's precious data, which has never been lost. He is also a DJ, live techno musician and producer of the underground party series "headspace" featuring live underground techno in the main room, while also host to one of the most innovative chill rooms that can be found at Melbourne parties, where the dominant style has been dub and live experimental electronica.

Nice to see you posting Duncan, welkom 2 da DRuG. :ugeek:

Hi guys!

The bike is 6 speed. I pretty much only use the top 2 gears really, as the electric takes all the hard work out of accellerating.
WITHOUT pedalling it does 25 km/h
WITH pedalling it typically does 28 to 32 kmh, fastest I have hit is 46 km/h.. above 35 km/h the motor probably isnt contributing much, but it does help you get up to those speeds to start with without working your legs too hard. It really helps on hills.. I just sail up hillls that a normal bike would be a reall workout.

I got this one off ebay as an all in one but there is a whole scene of people modding standard bikes with "stealth" (and not to stealth) motors as well.
