Nice build caps, wish i could get a new one [SUSS]. I'd go for ATI HD4850 over 8800gt, because they're the same price but the ATI performs much better (even better than 9800gtx, which costs $100 more than both cards). I'd also just get ddr2 pc800 RAM, as the premium might not be worth it for ddr3 1333. And if you want your comp purely for gaming e8400 is better and cheaper, though if you do other stuff id stick with q6600.

hmm well there are two reasons why im getting the 8800 gt is that is in my price range ( the 9800 isnt that much better and cost tons more) and the fact that i really dont like ATI's, i dont know why but i just dont like them.

I have very little knowledge when it comes to building computers so someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't running 32bit Vista not be making the most of his 4Gb RAM?

just basing that on the fact that I've managed to get this comp to recognize 3.5gb of the 4gb its got, and its running 32bit XP....

Just thought I'd also mention thats a very similar build to mine...

Q6600 Quad Core
8800GT
4Gb Ram

^^ The similarities....

Well, I have my laptop back ... these were the symptoms before it left:
- Fan on at full the moment any mild processing occurs, then staying on at full for quite some time
- Frame rate in games starting out very good.. but degrading to less than a frame every few seconds
- Internal display corrupting when tv out enabled

Asus arranged a courier both to collect and return at no charge.

The repair reports seems to have totally overlooked the TV out issue, though it does mention they flashed the BIOS so we'll see - there's good telly on at the moment - I'll test later.

The main gist of the report is they haven't replaced anything, but that the CPU heatsinc was thoroughly clogged with dust and not allowing airflow... they gave it a good dusting... this was of concern, as I worried this would have fixed nothing too dramatically.

So I power it up, run a few games - the machine is spookily quiet.. and fast!

Frame-rate is like it isn't struggling at all.. this is how I remembered this thing to run... before the fan & heat issues began to emerge.

The fan has whirred up a bit.. but less than I would have expected... The machine is ice cool... previously was running very hot.

So yay for Asus... they saved money while getting the machine working again.. but we'll see about the TV out.

One annoying quirk... while it was running hot, it produced a crack in the wrist-rest plate part of the chassis, which, rather than replacing, they have made worse with the dis-assemble-reassemble... Since it was back in two days, I guess it's no big issue going without it again at some stage.. I might call them.. hmm.

ooh ooh oh.. to keep this on topic.. forgot to mention the specs of the lappie (which now runs games very well for a $1500 machine):

ASUS F3JP
Intel Dual Core T5500 @ 1.66GHZ
2Gb RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon X1700 512Mb
XP 2008 Black Ultimate SP3 (this iso was from a torrent and is identical to vista throughout, but is actually XP)

It's finally running perfectly. yayy..

Rofl Nikt with all that dust.. I had my laptop for like a year now ($1300), and it's still running like it was before.. despite having a few formats. Try not to clog it up by putting it on a surface such as your bed or pants :P

HP Pavilion DV6404TU
Intel Core Duo T2500 @ 2.0 GHz
2 Gb RAM
Intel GMA 950 @ 1280x800
Windows XP Professional SP3

Not quite as good as yours. The CPU is actually par since you have a Core 2 Duo, not Core Duo. The graphic card is what ruins my gaming. My dad only offered me a choice between two models... in which one was 15.4" and the other 17". I had to settle for the 15.4" otherwise it'll be too bulky. The 17" had a GoForce 7300 with a crappier CPU.

Btw.. ever since the AU dollar is catching up with the US dollar, and companies aren't updating prices fast enough... you think it could be cheaper to buy overseas and deliver it here? Especially with an expensive, small and lightweight item such as a laptop...
