So what you doing with the Dell?

You should put it (monitorless) on ya lan, install linux on it and forward ssh/ftp/web ports to it... then maybe mta/samp

Seriously though, even a mega slow dinosaur would run perfectly as a linux server, and they're great to dev ya skillz on.

mmmmm if your meaning host a server, I doubt that would work very well given my internet is terrible at the best of times.

I was thinking of keeping my old dell as a jukebox of sorts, keep it pretty well empty, and just store music etc on it, to keep my good comp clean.

More for shell access to your network, which requires almost no network bandwidth, but gives you the ability to access every windows share on your lan in a secure fashion... windows shares can be mounted to within the file system on linux, so they just appear as directories on the linux shell.

I guess I'm mainly recommending this as a server for you to learn on, while having better access to your home network from outside, but without compromising security like you would with a remote desktop.

Web, ftp & ssh services all require minimal bandwidth, while dramatically expanding the flexibility/application of your home resources.

My friend has damn near the same computer, slightly different mobo and he's SLI-ing. Oh, it's the dual core of that cpu though. Either way, you're in for a good experience, I didn't see if you were x2 the gfx card, but if you do, you'll be set for years to come. Cheers on that PC, :D

Nik is telling you some great stuff here man. I'd recommend ubuntu server, but only because I've actually used it

Once you boot your new PC, you can reformat your dell and install a linux server. I did it in under 20 minutes on a dinosaur and was in complete control of it from this desktop. Now, when I say dinosaur, I mean... prior not only to your dell, but prior TO dell lol :P

Your PC would be a pretty cool little data server, backup storage, place for you and anyone else plugged into your home network to share files (irregardless of internet connectivity, this would be quite literally more of an intranet, closed web group), you can even host a little page and open it to the world, or your own SAMP/CSS/MTA servers. That *might* be a little far for that dell, but I have Zero experience in hosting game servers and I ONLY have HEARD about "how powerful a server needs to be to do dynamics" etc. I'm sure it's not as bad as I imagine.

Yes Certainly is a good idea, would be a good learning curve that. Have no idea where to get started though, given I have little to no knowledge on the subject. We'll see
