Pretty Unique Problem

Postby [SiK]Demiveil on Mon Dec 10, 2007 9:13 am

well first off a little bit of background, my parents computer got pretty seriously broken, so after exhausting all my knowledge I reinstalled windows, upon doing so I had to also do the usualdriver installation etc. it all ran smoothly till I got to the video card driver, installation worked and all, but in a momentary noob moment I accidentally changed the display resolution higher then the monitor can handle, at which point the monitor turned off. by starting in safe mode I am able to Reset the display resolution to 640x480 at 16bit colours, but it also seems to disable the driver entirely, I can only seem to get the driver going again by reinstalling, at which point it begins running at the same setting I originally set it to, which is too high for the monitor.

I'm not sure how I am going to get it out of this loop, so wondering if anyone could help. Its a Windows 98se thats about 8 years old. (They are buying a laptop soon, but would still like there comp to be useable till then.

I don't support win98 anymore these days.

Win2k is the oldest system I support.
:P

What I would do;
- Go to safe mode
- remove the driver entirely
- Reboot into normal mode
- install the correct driver.

Yeh - the above really is word advice... only point I feel needs clarifying though - when you remove the graphics card drivers, it is still going to find the graphics board and recommend installing the default "standard VGA driver" - LET IT DO THIS! (it's the critical part for many '98 based drivers) - many of the gfx card drivers require the framework set up by the standard VGA controller, in order to set up their stuff around it - this was particulary the case with my 3dfx 3500 TV.

well I used that program, and then reinstalled the drivers and it worked wonders.

Thanks very much.
