GTA IV Officially Announced for PC
Published by Admin on August 6, 2008

Finally, after the mass amount of rumours over the past months regarding whether or not GTA IV was coming to the PC, Rockstar Games has officially announced it to put us all out of our misery’s. Coming November 18th in North America and November 21st in Europe, PC gamers can finally experience the next-gen Grand Theft Auto with a newly expanded multiplayer.

“We are very excited to be releasing the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. “The whole team is dedicated to bringing an amazing gaming experience to the PC. The game looks and plays beautifully on PC and we can’t wait for people to play it.”

All I can think of right now is the potential for some truly amazing mods, I think I may need to upgrade my PC just to play this…

Realistically, can a 3.33 celeron D, 2gig ddr2 533, and the best AGP card I can find play this game?

A 7600gt or superclocked - will it play it? They are said to perform equal to the PCI versions.

Or should I be saving for a new PC?

I won't be buying until the map is being modded.

I can't believe we will have to wait until 2014 to play GTA V on PC.

I'm not sure, but it might do it a minimum quality - kind of ruins the experience in most games. I'm also not sure how much CPU load euphoria adds though.

I'm betting for a standard setup all that'll be required is a spec not dissimilar to that required for SA... we'll see though... I mean, think of GTA3<>Vice<>San - their required spec aint enormously different.

I'd say there would be a massive specification difference.
- GTA3, GTAVC, GTASA were designed for the PS2/Xbox. GTAIV is designed for the next gen PS3/Xbox360.
- GTA3, GTAVC, GTASA all run on the same game engine. GTAIV runs on 'RAGE'.
- GTA3, GTAVC, GTASA all had simple physics and animation. GTAIV uses 'Euphoria' for animation.

I'm guessing the way we mod GTAIV would be a whole lot different too.

They've done a reasonable job at keeping it compatible with a wide envelope of hardware, especially with all the graphics tweaks and Slick's Perfermance Tool... I find I can run it on the setup I had optimised for Vice City.

Overall, obviously there was a jump in the hardware required to run, but the file layout hardly changed at all.. though the tools required had to be updated to adapt to the internal model differences, for instance, the collision file arrangement changed in San Andreas, as did the way the texture files behaved across all versions..

But as far as the tools used? Pretty much the same ones for every version, sometimes with backward compatability... so modding should get going pretty quick, all depends on how quickly to tool coders start to understand the updates to what is hopefully, Rockstar's existing framework.
