Hi folks..

I, also, get this error... have had it sporadicly now since the early RC's.. and now on gold, and still the errors.

My host has upped his connections to over 1000, but there's still only two people hosted here on what is not a virtual host... there's 2 users on the box.

Could someone from the phpBB support team please post in here advising us all on a good approach to ascertaining what all these ?unclosed connections? are and how to diagnose where they are coming from.

I have reasonably advanced linux knowledge, but I'm lost here.. but surely someone in the phpBB support team has the ability to advise us all on a sound approach to fault finding and resolving this issue.. it has the capacity to damage phpBB's reputation, when, indeed, I accept it may be a problem that requires server maintenance.

OK, so I have full access to the server... how do we go about sorting this out? Please?

Maybe santa will bring us all the answer.

I am considering such extreme solutions as moving to a host by myself (still connected to the intermenets, but uno), upping the max connections to mysql's suggested absolute recommended max. of 5000, though I don't know how well that would travel on the server... also, if it comes to it, researching what tools there are to port posts etc from phpbb3 to other CMSs.. that's right, I'm prepared to move away from bb if this sort of problem is expected to be ignored on a support forums... which it appears to be.

Quite an odd error.. Not a syntax / database error either. Tbo, from my past experiences of "technical support" for these types of boards, expect little help. Good luck with it though.

Perhaps IPB > Phpbb I'd definatly say so. Though nobody likes to go through "forum software transfers"

Well yesterday this was quite the problem.

I suspect the source is the other client we share the server with... their main use for the server is to poll a large database of email addresses and send them advertising regarding raves. (The earthcore mailing list, for anyone interested - they're the main regular outdoor dance parties here in Victoria). I figure when they do a mailout, the database server is getting maxxed out. This is why I am as much considering moving to another host as alternate software. I fear, given the fact the errors still persist on an alternate phpbb sitting on the same host when they start occurring, that it will be no different regardless of CMS... that the problem is outside our control, since the mysql server daemon is managed by my #zog mates, who manage sql servers for a full time job... they act as the overall managers of my colohost, so earthcore & I get our fair share.

At any rate, be assured, I am deliberating on the matter, and considering the depth of it's impact.. I suspect it is only mild, with bad patches only occuring once or twice a week... probably when they do their weekly mailout @ http://earthcore.com.au.

Is everyone able to reach the board, most of the time?

Hmmm, a large database of emails.. you mentioned above that the error could me that the connection limit is maxed out (which seems very odd), perhaps they're scripts need a bit of revision. Try emailing the admin and asking them to have their scripts overlooked by a more experienced programmer who may be able to spot the inifficient area in the code (perhaps missing mysql_close()'s, or multiple (and useless) connections). I'm just speculating, I have no idea how they're scripts would be setup. Though, I doubt anything will, in the end, be fixed. Switching hosts seems more logical. I've never been denied access to the forums, though I havnt been here too long.

No, we maintain their network for them, the mailing list and all - it's huge, and does put an enormous load on the server - there's no way around it - if you've ever signed & put your details into the book @ an earthcore, you get this email... it's their bread & butter, we can't turn it off nor optimize it much more... just a very big job.

My question, though, was "has everyone been able to reach the board, most of the time?" - the aim here being, if this error only crops up every now and then, I 'm just going to leave it, since it is handy having all my shit in one place, and not having to spend even more money on hosting... at this stage.

Assuming the effect is minimal, I plan to leave this until later in the year, so I have more cash over the christmas break.

After having [DRuG]Grish and Zog (Duncan, a linux guru friend of mine and root admin of this server) over for a BBQ today, it was established that the "Too many connections" errors were coming from a mis-configured script for the mailing lists for the outdoor dance parties that are also run from this server.

The errors in the above mentioned scripts have since been rectified, so we shouldn't see these errors again.
