Yeh the forum banner was borked during the time I was fixing the icons issue - they are all configured in the same area - imageset.cfg. Because the files are cached in the phpBB system, I discovered, sometimes changes don't appear right away - thus the borked banner. Once I fully understood the behaviour of both the Admin panel and the imageset.cfg changes, I was able to resolve it 100%.

I have had an error reported to me by one of our new users, Phobos, explaining that when he attempts to edit is avatar within the user control panel, he was receiving the following:

"SQL ERROR [ mysql4 ] Unknown column 'f.field_show_profile' in 'where clause' [1054]"

After a quick google, I was able to establish that I neglected to run the supplied database update script when updating from 3.0.3 to 3.0.4. (https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtop ... 85&start=0)

By manually adjusting the board version field in our database back to 3.0.3, then running the update database script, it seems I have resolved the error.

Thanks, Phobos, for pointing this out - and folks, please, if you see any errors, let me know, such that I can address them.

As many of you may have noticed over the last few weeks, the "captcha" system used by phpBB to prevent spam bots from registering at the forums has been exploited - the name of the offending bot is Xrumer - a windows application that can be used to totally fill a board with crap users and messages.. it even employs the use of proxies to avoid ban.

In order to resolve this issue, I have replaced captcha with recaptcha 1.10 by Carnegie Mellon University.

So far it seems to be behaving well - not only does it look a little better, their words are relatively easy to read. It uses a private/public key specific to our domain, and as a project of a university, it also doubles to digitize books by utilizing the humans that are reading the captchas as a manual, world contribution to assisting the automated OCR of old books into digital form - that's right - each time you read a captcha, you are helping increase the amount of digitized books in the world.

Let me know if you hear any reports of people having difficulty registering.

Now that's pretty awesome! Xrumer is a great tool for marketing, but people use it the way they've been using it here and give it bad name. It is useful when you have a post to make to a community that spans many different sites, but using it to spam is just bad news. I've never actually used it, it's like 500 dollars, but those black hats out there, dicks, use it and do that random shit. I deleted some yesterday, glad there is a new slap in that spammers face. Let him scrape this board again, he won't be gettin through thanks to you :geek:
